Gruta Azul

Cuando tenía ocho años, mi papá me regaló esta caja de madera con 180 gises de pastel de la marca Rembrandt. En mi ciudad no había muchas tiendas de materiales para arte, solamente había una pequeña que era más especializada pues vendían cosas de importación.

Este objeto fue para mí un gran regalo que he guardado casi intacto durante 40 años pues solamente utilicé dos gises que corresponden al negro y al sepia porque pensaba que eran fáciles de sustituir. El resto de los colores se conservan nuevos, tanto obscuros como luminosos en el orden original.

Mi papá nunca supo que no los usé, yo en cambio compraba cajas más baratas o de colores básicos para continuar pintando; lo mismo me pasaba con los juguetes, los abría para verlos pero no para jugar.

He titulado esta obra como la famosa gruta azul de la isla de Capri, cuyo color azul brillante es un fenómeno de la luz solar que entra por una grieta submarina y es filtrada por el agua. Para acceder a ella hay que ir en un pequeño bote y librar la ola.

Hace tiempo una amiga presenció la muerte de su padre tras una larga agonía por el cáncer, describió ese momento como un descanso lleno de paz y mencionó que pudo ver en sus ojos cómo ligeramente iban velándose tras una membrana azul.

En agosto de 1997 vendí el coche que mi papá me dio para poder ir a la universidad y utilicé ese dinero para viajar por varios países de Europa. Decidí incluir tres fotografías que tomé de esa gruta con mi cámara, van ocultas en el espacio entre las esponjas que sostienen los gises y las tres charolas de madera.

Mi papá no conoció ningún país europeo. Tampoco pude ver esa membrana azul en sus ojos cuando murió.

BLUE GROTTO

When I was eight years old, my dad gave me this wooden box containing 180 Rembrandt soft pastels. There weren’t many art supply stores in my city; there was only one small shop that was somewhat specialized, as it sold imported goods.

This object was a magnificent gift that I have kept almost intact for 40 years; I used only two pastels—the black and the sepia—because I thought they would be easy to replace. The rest of the colors remain brand new—both the dark and the luminous shades—arranged in their original order.

My dad never knew I didn’t use them; instead, I would buy cheaper boxes or sets with basic colors to keep painting. The same thing happened with my toys: I would open them to look at them, but not to play with them.

I titled this work after the famous Blue Grotto on the island of Capri, where the brilliant blue color is a phenomenon caused by sunlight entering through an underwater crevice and filtering through the water. To enter it, one must take a small boat and time the swell of the waves just right.

Some time ago, a friend witnessed her father’s death after a long, agonizing battle with cancer. She described the moment as a peaceful rest and mentioned seeing his eyes slowly cloud over behind a blue membrane.

In August 1997, I sold the car my dad had given me for college and used the money to travel through several European countries. I decided to include three photographs I took at the grotto with my camera; they are tucked away in the space between the foam pads holding the pastels and the three wooden trays.

My dad never visited any European country. Nor did I see that blue membrane in his eyes when he died.
